Nassau (also New Providence) and Paradise Island are connected by a bridge and as regards tourism are the most developed islands of the Bahamas.
Cruise ships are very noticeable in Nassau, as many Atlantic and Caribbean cruises end here. At the Prince George Wharf in Nassau several big cruise ships can often be seen at the same time.
Nassau is not only a tourist centre but also the seat of the Bahamian government. Numerous historical monuments, for example the four large forts or the Queen's Staircase bear witness to the
importance of the islands since the middle of the 19th century.
Nassau has been the backdrop for numerous films, including the James Bond movie Thunderball.
Every year on 26 December and 1 January Nassau celebrates the colourful Junkanoo, a kind of street carnival.
Typical Bahamian cuisine, such as Conch Salad, is available mainly in the small street pubs (the so-called "Fish Fries") for example at Arawak Cay and Potter's Cay Dock.
Paradise Island is best known for the Atlantis Resort and Casino, whose aquarium and water park are among the largest in the world.
